Ella Wright is an award-winning filmmaker with experience across drama, documentary and commercial projects.
Ella’s directorial debut, Stage Changers was officially selected as part of Portland Film Festival, CinefestOz, Revelation Perth International Film Festival and was nominated for a Crystal Pine Award at the International Sound and Film Music Festival. Ella was nominated for ‘Best Direction in a TV or SVOD Documentary Episode or Documentary One-Off’ at the Australian Directors’ Guild Awards; ‘Outstanding Achievement in Direction’ and ‘Innovation in Documentary/Non-Fiction’ at the WA Screen Culture Awards. Filmed over 8 years, Stage Changers, was produced in conjunction with WBMC and is available via iwonder.com and Little Dot Studios.
Ella co-produced documentary Candidate Games for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation with Periscope Pictures, which was nominated for Best Documentary at the WA Screen Awards and The ATOM Awards. Her short film, George Jones and the Giant Squid premiered at Palm Springs International ShortFest, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Flickerfest and was the winner of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival (USA).
Ella is the Australian Producer for Rotterdam-based artist Pilar Mata Dupont, working with Pilar to create films such as Zauberberg and Shuffle made for gallery exhibition and public screens; and she has worked on many music videos for artists including Abbe May and Tim Minchin.
Ella has worked in production roles across documentary, drama and animation programs such as 100 Days to Victory (BBC Scotland, FOXTEL, History Channel Canada), Australia’s Health Revolution with Dr Michael Mosely (SBS), The Kimberley Man (NITV), The Circuit (SBS), Dogstar (BBC/Channel 9) and Red Dirt Road Trip (Discovery UK/FOXTEL).
Ella directed documentary Tee Ken Ng funded by ABC Arts and Screenwest, produced by Kirri Media. The film received four nominations at the WA Screen Culture Awards, and Ella was the winner of the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Directing’ award for 2023.
Ella is currently developing a live-action television series for pre-school aged children, supported by Screenwest.
